Program Assistant, Kaua‘i Local Food Cooperative Farmers Market Booth

About Us:

Founded in 2006, Mālama Kaua‘i is a community-based, 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that focuses on increasing local food production and access for Kaua‘i. We do this through a lens of resilience and sustainability, leveraging workforce and economic development efforts, partnerships, and innovative programs to grow community capacity.

Since 2020, our KauaiLocalFood.com food hub has supported over 100 local farmers and food producers, purchasing and distributing over $3.5M in local food. This new pilot project expands on that work by launching a cooperative farmers market booth to increase visibility for local producers and improve food access for our community. Visit MalamaKauai.org for more information on our work.

The Job:

This part-time position (~10-12 hours per week) supports the Kaua‘i Local Food Cooperative Farmers Market Booth Pilot, a one-year initiative designed to increase community access to local food while supporting small farmers and producers.

The Program Assistant will support the market booth’s day-to-day operations at two farmers markets, oversee SNAP/WIC acceptance programs, and conduct outreach to promote various food access programs. The work day starts and ends in Līhu‘e, with Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings. This has the opportunity to grow into more markets based on success.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Support setup and operations of MK’s farmers market booth at market locations across the island.
  • Assist customers, process payments and track inventory.
  • Share information about food access and other programs via flyers and social media posts.

Qualifications:

We’re looking for a self-motivated, community-minded team player who thrives in customer-facing environments, with strong attention to detail.

Ideal candidates will have:

  • 2+ years of experience in food systems, retail, or community-facing programs
  • Strong organizational, communication, and recordkeeping skills
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs regularly, set up a pop-up tent without assistance, and work in outdoor environments
  • A positive, flexible, and customer-service-oriented attitude
  • A passion for supporting local food systems and small farmers

Preferred but not required:

  • Experience with SNAP/EBT or food access programs
  • Familiarity with Kaua‘i’s farmers markets and food producers
  • Background in nonprofit project management or local food sales

Pay & Benefits:

Pay is $25–$30/hr for 10 to 12 hours per week and discounts on local food through our programs. Opportunities for continued and expanded work may be available depending on funding and program success — we’d love to find someone who wants to grow with us!

To Apply:

Send a resume and a brief intro letter to megan@malamakauai.org.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis, as we are looking to start this role in January.
Local knowledge is critical for this position; off-island candidates will not be considered.
