It’s roselle season and it’s finally hitting the shelves on KauaiLocalFood.com! Roselle is such a gorgeous plant, and BONUS – it needs very little human intervention to be grown successfully and sustainably here in the tropics.
This beautiful hibiscus (also known as Jamaican Sorrel, Florida Cranberry, Zobo, or more formally – Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used for its calyces, the sepals of the flower, which form a whorl that encloses the petals and forms a protective layer around a flower in bud.
Here’s a little recipe roundup to get your taste buds tempted:
- Teas – Basic teas and waters are what you’ll see the most here on Kaua`i, as it’s both easy and refreshing. Mix things up and try some new roselle recipes Agua de Jamaica, Zobo Drink, Hibiscus, Lemon Honey & Ginger Tea, or Cold Brewed Jamaica.
- Sauces – This “Florida Cranberry” Sauce would be a great substitution to create a local cranberry sauce for your thanksgiving meal! But we’re also dying to try out Hibiscus Syrup (with ginger and star anise, with a bonus rum punch recipe to use it in), or this Roselle-Rosemary Chicken recipe.
- Cocktails – Mostly commonly known is the Traditional Jamaican Sorrel Christmas Drink, but there are other unique recipes for libations, such as Hibiscus Ginger Punch, Spicy Roselle, and the tropical Christmas treat – Ponché De Roselle.
- Jams & Jellies – Another nickname for roselle is Australian Jamfruit because of its high natural pectin content, and recipes like this basic Rosella Jam, Florida Cranberry Jam, and Roselle Jelly will show you just how easy jamming can be.
- Desserts – Roselle’s tart flavor and vivid color is an exceptional complement for desserts, like Hibiscus, Mint, & Ginger Popsicles, Hibiscus Ginger Syrup & Ice Cream Float, and Hibiscus and Apple “Shortcake”.
