2/28: Garden Planning, Design, & Plant Selection
Ray Maki, Owner and Operator of Permaculture Kaua`i and Kaua`i Chapter President of Hawai`i Farmers Union United. Ray is a twenty year resident and active organic farmer on Kaua`i, specializing in permaculture, agroforestry, natural farming, native tropical landscapes, and commercial organic production systems. He is a graduate of three Permaculture Design courses, and offers consultation, beginning and advanced training in permaculture and agroforestry in Hawai`i.
3/7: Soil, Compost, Mulching, & Amendments
John Parziale of Kaua`i Authentic Farms. John Parziale has been farming and practicing tropical permaculture on Kaua`i for 18 years. He is the director of Kaua`i Authentic Foods in Moloa’a, a research-driven farm with an emphasis on ecological best practices and developing educational models in regenerative agriculture. With degrees in biology and health, John brings together science and techniques modeled after natural systems to design productive agricultural models. He has taught workshops and courses in sustainable agriculture in Hawai`i, the mainland, and Europe. He provides consultation in permaculture design, organic farming, and soil and compost biology. His areas of interest include animal systems, closed-loop production models, soil biology, and perennial food crops.
3/14: Plants & Seeds
Paul Massey, Executive Director of Regenerations International Botanical Garden. Paul oversees the activities of the Kaua`i Community Seed Bank and Library, the Biannual Community Seed and Plant Exchanges, and the 2-acre Kaua`i Food Forest at Malama Kaua`i’s Community Farm. He has many years experience teaching agriculture, including programs at KCC.
3/21: Pests & Common Garden Issues
Matthew Field moved to Kaua`i in 1992 and began his farming experience working for the Waipa Foundation and The Hawaiian Farmers of Hanalei, working in Hanalei’s taro industry for ten years. He also worked for Kaua`i Organics, operated a small native and specialty plant nursery, grew greens and specialty vegetables from his property in Keapana Valley, and cleared, constructed and planted approximately six acres behind Kilohana into taro lo’i. Since 2008, he has taught and lectured on organic, sustainable, and permaculture based gardening for Malama Kaua`i and Kaua`i Community College, and was on the planning committee for Malama Kaua`i’s Kalihiwai Community Garden and the Kekaha Community Garden. He is the owner of Field Landscape Services, creating high quality, organic, low maintenance landscape designs, food gardens, orchards, and diversified planting systems.
3/28: Garden Maintenance & Harvesting
Jeff Giacobetti, `Ike `Aina Teacher at Kanuikapono and `Ainalani Farm. Jeff has been a HI DOE educator for 23 years and was awarded HI DOE Science Teacher of the Year in 2004. He was educated in permaculture on the north shore of O’ahu and has been learning native farming and cultural practices through world-wide travel since 1993, including biodynamic farming in Hokkaido, Japan in 2007. He has implemented these practices into his own small, organic, family homestead farm, ‘Ainalani, in Moloa’a since 2012.
