Mālama Kaua‘i is seeking a research intern who is committed to helping us create a more sustainable tourism industry on Kaua‘i. Though the tourism industry in Hawaii has historically been focused on arrivals and spending, through our program, Volunteer Kauai, we envision an industry that promotes sustainability and enhances culturally authentic experiences. Working alongside a University of Hawaii researcher, this intern will gain experience in qualitative and quantitative research, including literature reviews, surveying, and report writing. Applicants should have their own laptop to work on. Duties include:
- Reviewing existing publications on tourism in the Pacific Islands
- Researching the state of sustainability in Hawaiian tourism, and conducting analyses to recommend actions for improvement
- Writing, graphics development, and editing for final report
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proficient with Google Docs
- Strong writing skills
- Ability to work collaboratively and independently
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet appropriate deadlines
- Interest and background in tourism/hospitality and/or sustainability
- Local applicants must be 18+ and income eligible
For income-eligible Kaua‘i residents of Hawaiian descent, the position is 6-8 weeks up to 40 hrs/ week at $10.10 per hour. _____________________________________
Off-island applicants must be able to financially secure housing and travel on island (best fit for students who have a for-credit paid internship program through their school, internship scholarship/stipend, etc.) Hours per week are flexible within the timeframe of M-F 8a-4:30p.
