AmeriCorps VISTA: Farm-to-School Coordinator at Kawaikini – Lihue

The Farm2School VISTA at Kawaikini NCPCS will support Malama Kaua`i’s Hawaiian Charter School Food Program, Mala‘ai Kula, by building the capacity of school food and garden programs to ensure that no student goes hungry and no parent must choose between their child receiving a culturally relevant education or getting fed at school. The day-to-day work will involve launching new programs, building sustainability for programming, recruiting and managing volunteers, and fundraising to address community poverty and food access issues within the school community.

Work with school staff and administration to develop, fund, and launch culturally-relevant school food and garden programs

  2. Support individual teachers with fundraising, grant writing, and related educational project execution
  3. Fundraise for projects and programs via grant writing, executing fundraising events, and community outreach
  4. Recruit and supervise volunteers to support school garden and food programs
  5. Build systems and resources for ongoing maintenance and sustainability of the program after the VISTA assignment has ended
  6. Streamline communication about school food and garden programs within the school community, including administration, teachers, parents, and students

Build systems for efficiency and sustainability of school meal programs, including localizing the procurement and purchasing of ingredients

  1. Survey school community to identify local sources of ingredients, including gardeners, farmers, ranchers, fisherman, and distributors
  2. Assist food service personnel in utilizing local sources and create systems for efficient purchasing and delivery
  3. Help to safely source produce from school garden to incorporate into food and nutrition education programs
  4. Assist with expanding on-site orchard and gardens based on produce needs, by working with school staff and recruiting community volunteers
  5. Track and report on % of local food served within school food programs

AmeriCorps VISTA is a year-long, full-time service opportunity through the Corporation for National & Community Service. You must be at least 18 to serve. Program Benefits Include:

– Bi-Weekly Living Allowance of $613.48
– Choice of $5,730 Education Award or $1,500 End of Service Stipend
– Healthcare Coverage
– Relocation Allowance, Student Loan Forbearance, and Childcare Assistance, if eligible
– Extensive training, networking, and professional development opportunities

AmeriCorps VISTA members receive a small subsistence allowance and should evaluate their financial situation to ensure that they are able to complete the full one-year term. The CNCS provides the living allowance to cover the cost of food, housing, and other basic necessities during service. The allowance is low because a VISTA member is expected to live at approximately the same economic level as the people they serve. You may attend school or have another part-time job during service, but will be expected to work on a full-time basis in this program.
