Aloha ʻĀina Workforce Program

Getting dislocated workers back to work in Kauai jobs with career-changing opportunities in the food systems and conservation fields!

The Aloha Aina Workforce Program is a 12 week career transition experience with a three-fold mission: 1.) provide on-the-job training for covid-displaced workers with living wage benefitted jobs, 2.) provide labor for island based small businesses and non-profits that have been hit with economic crisis to increase productivity and sustainability, and 3.) increase the labor force on Kauai of people who know how to care for Kauai’s greatest asset: the land.

The Aloha ʻĀina Workforce Program received over 300 applications! Through CARES Act funding we were able to place 24 full-time and part-time workers at 15 host sites in the agricultural, food systems and conservation fields. Those 24 workers got 14 weeks of on-the-job career transition experience, career change webinar training, and resume writing classes, all with above average wages and the option of health benefits.

At the end of the program, 96% of workers said they enjoyed their new career training more than their old job in tourism. 50% of participants were offered jobs in their new field, almost all of them transitioning from the tourism industry into new career fields!

The rest of them now have the experience and hireability to make it in a new industry. And we now have 24 more workers on Kauaʻi that are trained to care for the land. Although this was likely a one-time project for us to make connections for others who couldn’t apply for CARES funding directly, it was a worthwhile effort that created great change in the community!

See the Civil Beat coverage and For Kauai coverage on the program and our Malama Kauai blog for stories about our workers and how Aloha ʻĀina changed lives.
